I feel a hot flash of shame at the thought of everyone discussing my deficiencies that almost spoils my delight in the sleek silver laptop and the slim shiny iPhone. But when I open the brushed chrome top of the laptop and the air fills with a deep resonate chime, the shame is washed away in delight. Hadley must have been green with envy that Mr. Chadwick was sending me a brand-new laptop and phone.

Once I’ve connected to the library’s Wi-Fi, I log into my account and open a new email from Kurtis Chadwick.

Salutations! he writes. I hope that you are reading this on your new laptop. Gloria tells me it’s the top of the line. I wanted to make sure you had the best equipment to record the manuscript. We’re sending you a phone too, which Atticus tells me you can use to scan the manuscript—just like James Bond!—and then download it onto the laptop so you can make changes. All the latest technology! Knowing Veronica, she has you using a quill pen. And knowing her, she doesn’t want anyone to see her work-in-progress until it’s completed. I’ve worked with a lot of temperamental writers over the years and what I’ve found is that you want to give them enough rope so that they feel free but not enough to hang themselves. Veronica, while a brilliant writer, has a tendency to go down certain unfortunate rabbit holes and needs a steadying hand. I have no doubt, though, that between you and me we’ll be able to pull her out. When she wrote The Secret of Wyldcliffe Heights, she confided to me—as I now confide to you, trusting you will keep it entre nous—that she and “Jayne” had written the book together. At the time I thought she was speaking metaphorically, that she was one of those authors who say their “characters ran away from them” or that they heard their character’s voice dictating the story to them. But over the years I’ve come to suspect that she meant that the woman on whom the character Jayne was based—one of the real inmates of Wyldcliffe Heights, in other words—was in fact her cowriter and that is why she has been unable to write a second book on her own. It is my dearest hope that with you there to take down her words she will be able to, that you will be her “Jayne.” I eagerly await the fruit of your labors.
